Frequently Asked questions

What is the difference between a 'spot' gatzo style speed camera and an average speed camera

Will they urbanise the village?

Do they generate a lot of work for the police?

Do they work at night?

Is there any built in leeway?

Spot cameras record a single instance of speeding at a given point. They are effective for 'hot spots'. Average speed cameras use number plate recognition technology to record the time it takes a vehicle to cross two points along a stretch of road. These are effective when offences are committed along a longer stretch of road.

They are relatively small black boxes, accompanied by a camera sign in advance of the camera, to warn motorists that they are in place. Those installed in Waverley are at the entrance and exit points rather than within the villages.

The cameras are fully automated, as is the generation of speeding fines. Work is generated if/when motorists do not pay the fine.

Yes, they use infrared technology to capture number plate details at night.

Drivers who exceed by 1MPH can receive a speeding fine. Any leeway is at the discretion of the local police force.
